What Has Changed In America?

The unconventional perspective on the state of America

hat has changed in America? Obviously, many things, some very good and some not so good. I don’t think the problem is with the external, technological changes. I am thankful for transportation, communication, conveniences, medicine and electronics. They are only tools. It is the heart and mind of the user of these that makes their use good or evil.

Alexis de Tocqueville, a French political scientist, studied young America to determine why this fledgling country was so great. He said, “America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”

Would you rather live in America now or in America 100 years ago?

The qualities characterizing America then were diligent work ethic, personal responsibility, strong family units, a morality based on Judeo-Christian standards drawn from the Bible, compassion and care for one another, and a strong sense of unity. Most of those qualities have been eliminated and replaced with attitudes of laziness, entitlement, selfishness, irresponsibility, dissolving family units, disunity, and an immorality that has discarded Biblical standards and authority. America has ceased to be good.

If America is to become great again, it will not happen by military might, financial prosperity, employment opportunities, or national sovereignty. It must be deeper than that.

We must return to a vibrant faith, respect for divinely ordained authority, obedience to God’s standards of morality and ethics, and a genuine sense of compassion and love for our neighbors. What we really need is another Great Awakening.
